Paul Salyers was born and raised in small-town Indiana.
He received his bachelor's degree from Indiana State University in Terre
Haute, where he had studied both trumpet and piano. Once he decided to
become a band director, he concentrated heavily on his trumpet skills.
Mr. Salyers received his MAT from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix,
Arizona.
Mr. Salyers began his teaching career at a middle
school in Grants, New Mexico. He then moved to Enid, Oklahoma, where
he taught at Waukomis High School and Enid High School. After eleven
years in Oklahoma, Mr. Salyers moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he
taught at Hickman Mills High School for three years before moving to
California. Mr. Salyers has taught at Arlington High School in
Riverside and Baldwin Park High School in Baldwin Park. He currently
directs the Ramona High School Dynasty Marching Band in Riverside. He
also directs the concert band, jazz band, and pit orchestra at Ramona High
School, and hosts the
Southwest Regional Tournament.
Mr. Salyers's current students can be found in both
movies and television.
Mr. Salyers's talents are showcased by the musical
drills he writes for bands in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Southern California.
Mr. Salyers has led bands in Band of America regionals
in Arkansas, Texas, and Nevada, and at the BOA Championships in Detroit,
Michigan. He taught the Valiant Knights drum corps in Oklahoma.
He has taken bands to Paris, France, and he himself performed at the
Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Most recently, he led
the Ramona Dynasty Marching Band and Color Guard in the Chicago State Street
Parade, which received national coverage.
Mr. Salyers aims to lead his high school band in the
New York City Thanksgiving Day Parade. He plans to return to Europe
with students to further expose them to the influence of music throughout
the world.
Mr. Salyers currently makes his home in Riverside,
California, where he enjoys listening to jazz and driving his
red 1974 Corvette
around town. |
